The Eight Essential Pieces to a Smooth Swing
“The Eight Essential Pieces to a Smooth Swing” is the first section of COMPLETE HITTING and breaks down every aspect of the swing from start to finish. We show you what a professional swing looks like and we teach you the things that every professional hitter does at the plate, as well as the positions they get too in order to be successful. To learn more about “The Eight Essential Pieces to a Smooth Swing” click here.
1. GRIP - The first thing we talk about is Grip because holding the bat properly is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to you being the best hitter you can be and if you don’t walk up to the plate holding the bat properly you are not setting yourself up for success.
2. STANCE - We talk about the various positions and stances you can have at the plate and the positive and negative aspects of them. We leave options open as long as YOU understand that before launching the bat into the hitting zone every hitter is in the same position and the more indirect movement it takes to get to that position the more difficult it is to get consistency and repeatability.
3. Load/Launch position – Every hitter gets to a similar Launch position with their hands back just before driving their hands into the hitting zone. Most hitters load their hands back while some hitters start with their hands already in this position. At this point the stride is/has just taken place and the feet are aligned towards the pitcher. Every hitter gets to a launch position and the more difficult it is for you to get to yours, the more difficult it is to keep it consistent which in turn hurts your swing.
4. Bat Path – Having a short and direct bat path to the ball is extremely important and many young hitters develop a long and loopy swing. Quickness equals power in the baseball swing and we show you how to get the bat to the PoC as direct as possible. “Short to it and Long through it”
5. Point of Contact (PoC) – At the PoC there are certain things every successful hitter does exactly the same. Locked out front leg, flexed back knee driven into ground, weight over the center, palm up palm down hands, and a flexed back elbow allowing for extension through the baseball with eyes focusing on the PoC. We teach you what this looks like and how you can work on getting to this position properly.
6. Extension – Every good hitter gets great extension through the baseball. Many young hitters are unable to do this because they have already “extended to the ball” instead of “extending through the ball”. We show you what good extension looks like and how you can get more extension through the baseball.
7. Finish – Every hitter has their own signature finish to their swing. We talk about the positive and negative aspects of different finishes and what all successful finishes have in common.
8. Balance – Balance is without a doubt the most important aspect of the swing. Without balance from the ground up we have nothing as a hitter. The pitchers whole job is to throw off a hitters balance and timing so having good balance is the most essential piece to the swing. We show you what good balance looks like and how you can get better balance at the plate.
It’s not about how good you are now it’s about how good you can be. If you are already a good hitter and you don’t have a fundamentally sound swing, just imagine how great you could be if you did things right!!!!
BAD HABITS
In COMPLETE HITTING we have a section called BAD HABITS which is one of the most important sections of the DVD. So many hitters face the same challenges and do the same things wrong. In this section we teach you what the MOST COMMON BAD HABITS among hitters are and what they look like. Then in our DRILLS section we teach you how to fix them. If you watched the Pre Game show to the Major League All-Star game on MLB Network this year, you may have seen an interview with Harold Reynolds and Brandon Inge. Brandon Inge is a catcher and 3rd baseman for the Detroit Tigers. He has been in the Major Leagues for 8 years and has never hit more than 27 home runs in a season. This year he had 21 hrs at the break, he put up phenomenal numbers and it was his first All-Star selection. Harold asked Brandon “What can you attribute your success towards and what are you doing differently this year that you haven’t done in years past”. Brandon’s answer was “In the offseason I was working with my hitting coach and he noticed that when I was loading my hands, I was lowering them and wrapping them behind my body and that was preventing me from hitting the inside pitch”. This year many of Brandon’s home runs have been on pitches on the inside part of the plate. In our BAD HABITS section of COMPLETE HITTING we discuss WRAPPING THE HANDS because it is one of the most common problems among hitters and we teach you how to fix it!!!
COMMON BAD HABITS:
- Poor Approach
- Poor Balance
- Wrapping the bat
- Wrapping your hands
- Over striding
- Barring the arms
- Rolling over
These are just a few of the most common BAD HABITS that hitters have and in our COMPLETE HITTING DVD you can find out how to fix them.
TIPS
In COMPLETE HITTING you will find a variety of TIPS that can immediately make you a better hitter. These tips are ALL things used by professional hitters to give them an advantage at the plate.
- How to use soft focus as a hitter and develop better pitch recognition
- How to develop a routine to provide you with more comfort and focus at the plate
- How to handle pressure situations
- How to handle a pitcher that’s absolutely nasty
DRILLS
The Approach – So many of your coaches have told you to “watch the pitcher” and “look at the pitcher” before the game starts and while it’s going on but DO THEY EVER TELL YOU WHAT TO LOOK FOR or HOW TO USE THE INFORMATION. The answer is no and it’s not their fault because they were never taught either. In this section we discuss what you should be looking for and we teach you how to use that information during the course of the game.
- 9 Zones 9 Swings
- Cage Work
- Mirror Work
- The Fence Drill
These are just a few of the many drills we talk about in COMPLETE HITTING that can not only fix your bad habits, but help to make your swing more consistent.
